Yokohama money guide 2026: 12 exchange shops, ATMs, and tourist-zone payments

⚡ 30-Second Answer: Yokohama = Kanto's 2nd-most cashless city. Minatomirai, Kannai, Chinatown area: 92% card acceptance; street stalls are cash. Exchange: Yokohama Sta. West Exit Travelex (mid -3%) or JR Tower B1 bank counter (mid -2.8%). 24h ATM: 7-Eleven at West/East exits. Travelers need ¥15,000-25,000 cash + Wise/Revolut.

Quick Reference Value
Best JR Tower B1 bank (mid -2.8%)
Station Yokohama Sta. Travelex (mid -3%)
24h ATM 7-Eleven West/East exits
Cash needed ¥15,000-25,000
Card acceptance 92%
Last verified June 2026

Yokohama is a day-trip favourite from Tokyo, and money-wise it's basically a Tokyo extension — Suica/PASMO works identically, card acceptance is at Tokyo levels (~90%+), and the major exchange chains are present in the main tourist clusters (Minato Mirai, Yokohama Station, Sakuragicho). The total 12 active exchange points are about 1/30th of central Tokyo's density, so long-stay travellers will want to load up in Tokyo first for efficiency.

TL;DR

  • 12 exchange points clustered at Minato Mirai / Yokohama Station / Sakuragicho
  • Major chains present: Travelex, World Currency Shop, Smart Exchange, Pocket Change
  • Suica/PASMO works the same as Tokyo — IC cards are fully supported
  • Cheapest combo: Wise/Revolut card → Seven Bank ATM at Yokohama Station

1. Exchange points by zone

a. Yokohama Station — the broadest selection

Location Type
Travelex Yokohama West Counter
World Currency Shop Joinus (2F) Counter
Smart Exchange (inside station) Auto-machine
Pocket Change (inside station) Auto-machine

Yokohama Station is the crossroads of JR / Tokyu / Keikyu / Sotetsu / Minatomirai lines. Quick 5-min exchange while changing trains is realistic.

b. Minato Mirai — the tourist heartland

  • Travelex Minato Mirai — 3-5-1 Minatomirai, Nishi-ku
  • World Currency Shop Landmark Tower 1F
  • Smart Exchange Kahala Hotel & Resort

Easy stops on the standard tourist loop (Red Brick Warehouse, Cosmo World, Cup Noodles Museum).

c. Sakuragicho

  • Smart Exchange Sakuragicho (Naka-ku, Sakuragicho 1-chome)

Useful for JR Keihin-Tohoku Line / Yokohama Subway Blue Line travellers as a side door into the Minatomirai 21 district.

2. Rate ladder

Channel Distance from mid-market Cost on a $1,000 exchange
Wise/Revolut card → station ATM +0.5% ¥750
Travelex Minato Mirai / West +1.0% to +1.5% ¥1,500–2,250
Smart Exchange (each location) +1.0% to +1.5% ¥1,500–2,250
World Currency Shop Joinus +1.5% to +2.0% ¥2,250–3,000

Differences are small per transaction but compound: 5 exchange runs at the wrong spot = ~¥5,000 lost.

3. ATMs that work for foreign cards

Inside / around Yokohama Station:

  • Seven Bank ATM — multiple at JR East/West exits, 24-hour
  • AEON Bank ATM — Sogo Yokohama, 9:00–21:00
  • JP Bank (Yucho) ATM — Yokohama Central Post Office

Seven Bank has the highest foreign-card acceptance. Wise/Revolut card withdrawal: ¥220 fee per transaction.

4. Tourist-zone payment table

Spot Card accepted Cash recommended
Red Brick Warehouse ✅ near-universal Low
Chinatown △ ~50% Medium (small shops are cash-only)
Cosmo World ✅ entry + rides accept cards Low
Motomachi Shopping Street ✅ most shops Low
Sankei-en Garden ❌ entry fee cash only Medium
Yamashita Park n/a n/a

Chinatown is the cash gotcha — many family-owned restaurants and souvenir stands still take cash only. Keep ~¥5,000 in small notes ready.

5. Yokohama vs Tokyo, side by side

[Tokyo] [Yokohama]
Exchange points: 700+ → 12
Competition: heavy → moderate
24-hour ATM density: high → concentrated at the station
Card acceptance: 95%+ → 90%+

→ Load up in Tokyo and come over is the dominant strategy. Standalone exchange in Yokohama isn't bad, but isn't optimised either.

Bottom line

  • Day-trip tourist → exchange in Tokyo OR pull yen from Yokohama-Station Seven Bank with Wise/Revolut
  • Staying overnight in Yokohama → Travelex / WCS at Minato Mirai or Yokohama-West is plenty
  • Chinatown + Sankei-en bound → keep ¥5,000 cash in pocket
