Kanazawa money guide 2026 — Omicho, Higashi Chaya, Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Station exchange, ATMs, cards, hotels

The single-page pillar for handling money in Kanazawa. Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen opened (Tokyo to Kanazawa in 2h30m for ¥14,000), this old castle town has seen a tourism boom — Western visitors via Tokyo/Kyoto, plus direct flights from Taipei/Seoul into nearby Komatsu Airport. The catch: Omicho Market, the Higashi Chaya geisha district, and Kazue-machi all run 70-80% on cash, and Kenrokuen's ¥320 admission is best paid in cash. Card-only travelers get caught here.

This page covers the Kanazawa Station arrival → Omicho Market → Kenrokuen → Higashi Chaya → Katamachi nightlife money flow across 6 axes.

TL;DR — your no-stress Kanazawa money playbook

  • Cash to carry: ¥8,000-12,000/day per person (Omicho seafood bowls, chaya district gold-leaf souvenirs, loop bus)
  • Best exchange: WCS Kanazawa Station (near Kanazawa Forus), or pre-exchange in Tokyo/Kyoto + Seven Bank ATM at Kanazawa Station. Mid −1.5 to −2.5%
  • Best ATM: Seven Bank inside Kanazawa Station + Korinbo / Katamachi konbini, mid-market with Wise/Revolut
  • Hotels: Station-front ¥8,000-15,000, Korinbo/Kenrokuen mid-range ¥15,000-30,000, Kagaya (Wakura Onsen) high-end ¥40,000+. Compare Rakuten Travel / Agoda / Jalan / JTB
  • Tokyo → Kanazawa: Hokuriku Shinkansen ¥14,120 (2h30m) / Kyoto-Osaka → Kanazawa: Thunderbird limited express ¥7,790 (2h30m)
  • Mobile: City core full LTE, Hakusan area has gaps. Airalo / Sakura Mobile

1. Five sub-areas in Kanazawa

Kanazawa Station (the gateway)

Hub for the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Thunderbird limited express, and IR Ishikawa local lines. The iconic Tsuzumi-mon drum gate greets you at the east exit, with loop buses and local buses fanning out from here. Kanazawa Forus shopping, ANA Crowne Plaza, and Hotel Nikko Kanazawa are all directly connected. Card acceptance 90%, 1-2 exchange shops, plenty of Seven Bank / Lawson Bank ATMs.

Omicho Market (the "Kanazawa kitchen")

300 years of history as Kanazawa's main fresh-food market. Seafood bowls, sushi, sweet shrimp, grilled nodoguro are the signature dishes. Heavy crowds 7-9 AM for the breakfast circuit. Cash 70-80% — the seafood-bowl restaurants accept cards for ¥3,000-5,000 meals, but the back-alley produce, side-dish, and fruit stalls are cash-only. Bring ¥5,000-8,000 cash buffer before entering.

Higashi Chaya / Kazue-machi / Nishi Chaya (the three teahouse districts)

Kanazawa's three preserved geisha districts, with bengara-lattice machiya townhouses. Higashi Chaya is the largest and busiest, Kazue-machi runs quietly along the Asano River, and Nishi Chaya by the Sai River feels more local. Gold-leaf soft serve ¥800-1,200, gold-leaf workshops, teahouse cafes ¥1,500-2,500. Card acceptance 40-60% — small souvenir shops are cash-only.

Kenrokuen / 21st Century Museum / Kanazawa Castle Park

The main sightseeing block. Kenrokuen ¥320 / 21st Century Museum ¥450 (special exhibitions extra). Buy entry tickets in cash (the counters do accept cards but lines back up at peak times). The 21st Century Museum's special-exhibition ticketing is slightly more card-friendly, but bring ¥1,000 notes and coins as your default.

Korinbo / Katamachi (nightlife + shopping)

Kanazawa's biggest entertainment district — the Katamachi scramble, Korinbo 109 building, and 109 Libre. Izakaya, sushi, all a 10-minute walk from Omicho. Nightlife card acceptance 70-80%, but kappo restaurants and oden stalls lean cash. Hokkoku Bank head office is also at Korinbo if you need bank-window exchange.

2. Exchange — Kanazawa Station front and Korinbo are the realistic plays

Flagship shops (USD, May 2026)

Shop Rate vs mid-market Hours Location
WCS Kanazawa Station −1.5 to −2.0% 10:00-19:00 Near Kanazawa Forus, 3-min walk from east exit
Travelex Kanazawa Station −2.5 to −3.0% 09:00-19:00 Inside Kanazawa Station, near Shinkansen gate
Daikoku-ya Korinbo −1.5 to −2.0% 10:00-20:00 Korinbo 109 area, mainland chain
Hokkoku Bank Kanazawa main branch −3.0 to −4.0% Weekdays 09:00-15:00 Korinbo main branch, bank rate (worst)
Seven Bank ATM (Kanazawa Station) mid-market with Wise/Revolut 24/7 2 inside the station + konbini around

→ Deep dive: #2 Hidden cost of airport exchange

Pre-exchanging in Tokyo or Kyoto

Kanazawa has far fewer exchange shops than mainland major cities, and limited inventory. For USD/EUR amounts above ¥30,000, pre-exchanging at Shinjuku WCS or in front of Kyoto Station gets you mid −1.0 to −1.5% — a small but real win. For KRW/TWD, use Komatsu Airport or Kansai International Airport.

Emergency Wise/Revolut play

If you forgot to exchange, using Wise / Revolut at the Seven Bank ATM inside Kanazawa Station is the only mid-market path. Pulling ¥20,000-30,000 in one shot is fee-efficient.

Komatsu Airport (KMQ) arrivals

Komatsu has direct flights from Taipei and Seoul. Arrivals lobby has Japan Bank and Hokkoku Bank exchange windows at mid −3 to −4% — mediocre. Exchange ¥10,000 at the airport for the bus to Kanazawa, then top up at the station is the sensible split.

3. ATMs — concentrated at Kanazawa Station, Korinbo, and Katamachi

Location Count Hours
Inside Kanazawa Station (Seven Bank) 2 24/7
Konbini around Kanazawa Station (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson) 5+ 24/7
Korinbo / Katamachi konbini 8+ 24/7
Around Omicho Market 3+ 24/7
Near Kenrokuen (FamilyMart) 1 24/7
Higashi Chaya district konbini 2-3 24/7
Komatsu Airport Seven Bank 2 06:00-22:00

→ #76 Seven Bank ATM complete guide

The local-bank ATM trap

Hokkoku Bank / Hokuriku Bank / Fukui Bank ATMs (visible around Kanazawa Station) reject foreign-issued cards at a high rate. Stick to Seven Bank and E-net (FamilyMart / Lawson). Japan Post Bank ATMs also accept foreign cards, but watch their hours.

ANA Crowne Plaza, Hotel Nikko Kanazawa, big hotels 100%

Higashi Chaya cafes and gold-leaf workshops 50-70%
Higashi Chaya small souvenir / wagashi shops 20-40% (cash)
Kenrokuen / 21st Century Museum entry counter Cash preferred
Katamachi / Korinbo kappo and oden stalls 40-60%
Major sushi chains (Kanazawa Maimon Sushi etc.) 90%
Loop bus (Kanazawa Castle Town Loop) ¥200 cash or IC card

→ #15 Wise vs Revolut vs bank cards / #4 Cash vs card in Japan

Gold-leaf souvenir payment quirk

Gold-leaf soft serve ¥800-1,200 is mostly cash. Gold-leaf cosmetics and crafts ¥2,000-15,000 vary by shop (Hakuichi and Imai Kinpaku flagship stores take cards). For purchases over ¥10,000, check the card policy in advance — if not accepted, split the bill between card and cash at multiple counters.

5. Hotels — station-front, sightseeing belt, and onsen towns are different price tiers

Area Vibe Price (2 pax, 1 room)
Kanazawa Station (east / west exit) Business + tourism hub ¥8,000-15,000
Korinbo / Katamachi Nightlife district ¥10,000-20,000
Kenrokuen / 21st Century Museum area Sightseeing-direct, mid-luxury ¥15,000-30,000
Around Omicho Market Best for breakfast people ¥10,000-22,000
Kagaya (Wakura Onsen) Top-tier Hokuriku ryokan ¥40,000-80,000
Yamanaka / Yamashiro (Kaga Onsen) Onsen ryokan ¥20,000-50,000

Compare 4-5 sites on the same dates:

  • Rakuten Travel — Japan's largest, strong on Kaga Onsen inventory, Rakuten Points
  • Jalan — Recruit platform, deep reviews, good for ryokan selection
  • JTB — established trust brand, strongest for Kagaya / Kai Kaga sales
  • Agoda — tuned for Taiwan / Hong Kong, cheaper on Kanazawa station-front hotels
  • AirTrip Hotel — same-day availability

Kanazawa hotels sell out on weekends — book 2-3 weeks ahead. Top ryokans like Kagaya are typically 2 months ahead.

6. Connectivity — city core is Tokyo-grade, Hakusan and Noto have gaps

Option 1-week cost
eSIM (Airalo / Holafly) ¥1,500-4,000
Sakura Mobile (voice SIM) ¥3,000-5,000
WiFi Rental .com ¥3,000-5,000

Kanazawa central (station, Omicho, Kenrokuen, Korinbo) is full LTE / 5G. Hakusan area and the tip of the Noto Peninsula have dead spots — if you're going to Noto, pocket WiFi router + spare battery is safer. The Komatsu-Kanazawa highway bus and Thunderbird interior are LTE OK.

7. Tour booking — Kanazawa launchpad picks

  • Kenrokuen + Kanazawa Castle combo ticket: ¥500 at the window, cash preferred
  • 21st Century Museum special exhibitions: Pre-purchase on the official site (cards OK); same-day window queues are long
  • Higashi Chaya teahouse tours (Shima / Kaikaro): book via VELTRA, ¥500-700
  • Kanazawa food tours (Omicho + chaya district guided): VELTRA / Klook
  • Kaga Onsen day-trip onsen: coupons via Jalan
  • Tokyo / Kyoto-Osaka → Kanazawa Shinkansen + ryokan packages: JTB / Rakuten Travel / AirTrip Plus
  • Kanazawa Castle Town Loop Bus: ¥200 per ride / ¥600 day pass (cash to the driver)

FAQ

Q: How much cash should I bring to Kanazawa?

A: ¥8,000-12,000 per person per day. Hotels go on card; the ¥5,000-8,000 cash slot covers Omicho bowls + Kenrokuen entry + gold-leaf souvenirs + loop bus. For 2 nights, plan ¥20,000-30,000 cash.

Q: Should I pre-exchange in Tokyo or Kyoto?

A: For amounts over ¥30,000, yes — Tokyo/Kyoto save you about 1%. For ¥10,000-20,000, the WCS at Kanazawa Station is fine. Skipping the pre-exchange step also saves time during transit.

Q: Is Kenrokuen cash-only?

A: The window accepts cards but cash is faster. For a ¥320 ticket, the card-fee math isn't worth the queue — ¥1,000 notes + coins is the practical move. The 21st Century Museum's ¥1,500-tier special exhibitions are easiest to pre-buy online.

Q: Are Omicho Market seafood bowls card OK?

A: Seated restaurants (Omicho Shokudo, Yamasan Sushi, etc.) 60-80% accept cards. Stand-eat, takeaway, and back-alley shops are cash-only. Carry ¥5,000 + ¥1,000 notes + coins going in.

Q: Does Kagaya (Wakura Onsen) need cash?

A: Checkout accepts cards. Pre-payment cards online is also possible. But the in-ryokan shop, vending machines, and add-on orders are sometimes cash. Keep ¥5,000-10,000 separately in cash.

Q: How do I get from Komatsu Airport to Kanazawa Station?

A: Limousine bus ¥1,300 (40 min), or Hokutetsu Bus combined with local lines. Cash or IC card (Suica/PASMO/ICOCA). For Noto exploration, OTS / Toyota Rent-a-Car are at the airport counters.
