Nagoya Castle keep across the moat — stone walls, greenery, and moving clouds make the classic tourist shot

Nagoya is Chubu's hub city, typically visited as a Tokyo–Osaka stopover or as a gateway via Centrair (Chubu Centrair International Airport). Currency exchange clusters at Nagoya Station and Sakae (the central shopping district), with 13 total points across the city. Rates lag Tokyo's best by about 0.3% — fine for short visits, slightly more expensive than the Tokyo competition but still actionable. ¥15,000–¥20,000 in cash covers typical needs.

TL;DR

  • 13 exchange points clustered at Nagoya Station + Sakae
  • Major chains: Travelex, World Currency Shop, Smart Exchange
  • Centrair Airport has its own counters but Nagoya Station offers more variety
  • Cheapest combo: Wise/Revolut card → Seven Bank ATM at Nagoya Station

1. Exchange points by zone

a. Nagoya Station (the main cluster)

Shop Location Notes
Travelex Nagoya JR Central Towers Direct station access, English-speaking staff
WCS Nagoya JR Nagoya Station 1F Inside station, near Shinkansen gate
Smart Exchange Nagoya Naka-mura-ku, Meieki Auto-machine
SMART EXCHANGE Bic Camera JR Gate Tower (9F) Meieki 1-1-3 Pair with electronics shopping
SMART EXCHANGE Ibis Styles Nagoya Meieki 4-22-24 Hotel-affiliated
SMART EXCHANGE Sugi Pharmacy Meieki-North Meieki 2-chome Pharmacy convenience

9+ shops within a 5-min walk of Nagoya Station. Exchange immediately on Shinkansen arrival.

b. Sakae (Nagoya's main shopping district)

Shop Location
Smart Exchange Sakae Naka-ku, Sakae 3-5-1
SMART EXCHANGE Sugi Pharmacy Fushimi-Misono Naka-ku, Sakae 1-45

Sakae is where the department stores, underground shopping arcade, and Nagoya nightlife concentrate. Easy stop while sightseeing.

2. Rate ladder

Channel Distance from mid-market Cost on $1,000
Wise/Revolut → Nagoya Station Seven Bank ATM +0.5% ¥750
Travelex Nagoya +1.3% to +1.5% ¥1,950–2,250
WCS Nagoya Station +1.5% to +2.0% ¥2,250–3,000
Smart Exchange (each location) +1.0% to +1.5% ¥1,500–2,250
Bank counter +1.8% to +2.2% ¥2,700–3,300

Competition exists but isn't Tokyo-level. Short visits won't notice the difference.

3. ATMs

Nagoya Station area:

  • Seven Bank ATM — JR Nagoya Station + multiple subway-station Seven-Elevens, 24-hour
  • AEON Bank ATM — at AEON Mall locations
  • JP Bank (Yucho) ATM — Nagoya Central Post Office (in front of the station)

3+ Seven Bank ATMs are inside the Nagoya Station underground passageway, accessible regardless of time-of-day.

4. Tourist-spot payment cheatsheet

Spot Cards accepted Cash recommended
Nagoya Castle ✅ entry by card Low
Atsuta Shrine ❌ offerings + omamori are cash-only Medium (~¥1,000)
Noritake Garden ✅ shop + café take cards Low
Osu Shopping District △ ~50% (older shops cash-only) Medium (~¥5,000)
Higashiyama Zoo & Botanical Gardens ✅ cards OK Low
Toyota Industrial Memorial Museum ✅ cards OK Low

Atsuta Shrine + Osu District = where you need ~¥5,000 cash. Everywhere else, cards are fine.

5. Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO)

  • Centrair has its own Smart Exchange + Travelex counters
  • But airport rates run higher (the usual 3.5%+ vs mid-market)
  • Meitetsu Mu-Sky train to Nagoya Station: 28 minutes, ¥1,250
  • Better to skip the airport counter and exchange at Nagoya Station — more options, better rates

Bottom line

  • Half-day to 1-day Nagoya visit → everything's solvable at Nagoya Station
  • Larger exchange amounts → Travelex Central Towers is the safe choice
  • Auto-machine preference → multiple Smart Exchange options in the station area + Bic Camera
  • Card-only travel → Seven Bank ATM with Wise/Revolut = cheapest
