Kamakura / Shonan Coast Day Trip Guide 2026 — Quick Answer Big Buddha / Enoden / Beaches Budget

⚡ 30-second takeaway: Kamakura day trip = ¥6K–12K per person (round-trip from Tokyo + meals + temple admission). From Shinjuku, the JR Yokosuka Line takes 60 minutes for ¥940, and the Enoden day pass is ¥800 for unlimited rides between Kamakura and Enoshima. Hit the four big sights with the Kotokuin Big Buddha ¥300 + Tsurugaoka Hachimangu free + Hasedera ¥400 + Zeniarai Benten ¥300. The beaches are free, but spring and summer mean crowds and full parking lots. Rainy days are fine too — most temples have plenty of indoor shelter.

5 mistakes tourists tend to make

  1. Komachi-dori on weekends: packed so tight you can't walk — go on a weekday or by 9 a.m.
  2. Buying Enoden tickets per ride: the ¥800 day pass saves a lot.
  3. Skipping the inside of the Big Buddha: just ¥50 for a special 5-minute experience.
  4. Eating shirasu rice bowls at 1–2 p.m.: sold out — go before noon.
  5. Trains after 5 p.m.: it's rush hour back to Tokyo, expect crowds.

FAQ

Q: Can I make it back to Tokyo at night from a Kamakura day trip?

A: Yes, easily. Last train from Kamakura is around 11 p.m., last in Tokyo around midnight. Just watch out for the 5–6 p.m. rush.

Q: Is it worth going all the way to Enoshima?

A: Absolutely. The Kamakura + Enoshima combo is the complete Kamakura day trip. Even the 30-minute Enoden ride alone is a sightseeing highlight.

Q: What about rainy days?

A: Many temples have roofed structures, so sightseeing is still fine. The Kannon hall at Hasedera and the main hall at Kenchoji are great places to wait out the rain.

Q: Is it good with kids?

A: Kids love the Enoden, the Big Buddha, and the beaches. Strollers are fine at Kamakura station, but Hasedera has lots of slopes — be careful.

Q: Can I head straight from Kamakura to Hakone?

A: It's possible, but it takes about 3 hours. Heading back to Tokyo first and going to Hakone the next day is more efficient.
