30-second answer

Japan's castles are military strongholds built between the Sengoku and Edo eras (16th-17th centuries). About 200 remain nationwide, of which 12 still have their original keeps. World Heritage Himeji Castle, the oldest surviving Matsumoto Castle, the "castle in the sky" Takeda Castle and Kumamoto Castle (still being restored after the earthquake) each have a unique appeal. Entry is a reasonable ¥400-1,500 and you can see a castle in half a day to a full day. Klook English-guided tours (¥2,000-8,000) make the history and architecture far more accessible.
