Hiroshima cash culture 2026: 9 exchange points, A-bomb Park payments, and the okonomiyaki cash trap

⚡ 30-Second Answer: Hiroshima = 82% card acceptance (above regional avg) — Peace Park, Miyajima, most okonomiyaki shops take cards. Exchange: Travelex at Hiroshima Sta. South (mid -3.2%) or Shareo B1 in Kamiyacho (mid -3%), 24h ATM: 7-Eleven at Hiroshima Sta. and Kamiyacho. ¥15,000-25,000 cash + card works. Okonomiyaki street stalls and Miyajima approach shops need cash, Itsukushima Shrine offerings need coins.

Quick Reference Value
Sta. South exchange Travelex (mid -3.2%)
Kamiyacho Shareo B1 mid -3%
24h ATM 7-Eleven Sta. + Kamiyacho
Cash needed ¥15,000-25,000
Card acceptance 82%

Hiroshima is the Peace-Memorial-Park + Miyajima day trip for most foreign visitors. Money-wise, the city carries a slightly more cash-friendly culture than Tokyo — card acceptance hits roughly 80–85% versus Tokyo's 95%+, and the famous okonomiyaki shops are notorious for being cash-only. 9 exchange points are distributed across the Kamiyacho / Hatchobori central shopping district and Hiroshima Station. Plan on ¥20,000+ in cash.

TL;DR

  • 9 exchange points across Kamiyacho / Hatchobori / Hiroshima Station
  • Major chains: Smart Exchange, World Currency Shop, Daikokuya
  • Card acceptance: solid at major chains, okonomiyaki shops are usually cash
  • Recommended cash: ¥20,000–¥30,000

1. Exchange points by zone

SMART EXCHANGE 7-Eleven Hiroshima Teppocho-North Naka-ku, Teppocho 6-15 Convenience-store location

This is Hiroshima's main shopping zone — Hondori arcade, Shareo underground mall, PARCO Hiroshima.

2. Rate ladder

Channel Distance from mid-market Cost on $1,000
Wise/Revolut → Hiroshima Station Seven Bank ATM +0.5% ¥750
WCS Hiroshima +1.5% to +2.0% ¥2,250–3,000
Smart Exchange (each location) +1.0% to +1.5% ¥1,500–2,250
Daikokuya Hondori +1.3% to +1.8% ¥1,950–2,700
Bank counter +1.8% to +2.2% ¥2,700–3,300

Roughly +0.5% behind the Tokyo best. Small but real.

3. Tourist-spot payment cheatsheet

Spot Cards Cash needed
Peace Memorial Park n/a (free) n/a
A-Bomb Dome n/a (external viewing only) n/a
Peace Memorial Museum ✅ entry by card Low
Shukkeien Garden △ entry cash-preferred Medium (¥500)
Hiroshima Castle ❌ entry ¥370 cash-only Medium
Okonomimura (Hatchobori) ❌ mostly cash-only High (¥5,000)
Hondori Arcade ✅ most shops Low
Miyajima ferry ✅ JR Pass or IC card OK Low
Miyajima momiji-manju shops △ half are cash-only Medium (¥2,000)

Okonomimura is the trap. Hiroshima's signature okonomiyaki dish, and most of the venue's restaurants take cash only. Have ¥5,000 ready before you go.

4. ATMs

  • Seven Bank ATM — Hiroshima Station + multiple Seven-Eleven branches, 24-hour
  • AEON Bank ATM — AEON Mall Hiroshima Fuchu and similar locations, 9:00–21:00
  • JP Bank (Yucho) ATM — Hiroshima Central Post Office, by the station

Hiroshima Station + EKIE Hiroshima Seven Bank are the most foreign-card-friendly.

5. Miyajima cash situation

Miyajima is the famous floating-torii shrine island, accessible by ferry. Cash culture is notably stronger:

Item Status
Ferry boarding ✅ Suica/PASMO OK
Itsukushima Shrine entry ¥300 ❌ cash only
Omotesando shopping street △ ~50% take cards
Old momiji-manju shops ❌ many are cash only
Ropeway ✅ cards OK

Get ¥5,000 cash before crossing to Miyajima. Easiest place: Hondori arcade or Hiroshima Station ATM/exchange before boarding the ferry.

Bottom line

  • Peace Park + Miyajima full-day course → ¥20,000–¥30,000 cash + card
  • Larger exchange → WCS Hiroshima (Aqua building) or Daikokuya Hondori
  • Auto-machine preference → Smart Exchange inside Hiroshima Station 7-Elevens
  • Card-only travel → Hiroshima Station Seven Bank ATM with Wise/Revolut
