How to exchange the JR Pass e-voucher you bought on Klook or the official site for an actual physical pass after landing in Japan. The whole process at an airport green-window takes 10-20 minutes.
What to bring: passport with arrival stamp, your Klook e-voucher (printed or on phone), 20 minutes.
1
Buy the JR Pass on Klook before you fly
Order from Klook's JR Pass page before departure. After payment, an e-voucher arrives by email. Printing is recommended, but staff also accept phone screens.
2
After landing, find the green-window (Midori-no-Madoguchi)
Narita, Haneda, KIX, Fukuoka and other major airports have JR ticket offices marked 'JR Ticket Office' or '緑の窓口'. Follow the signs from arrivals.
3
Queue — 30-60 minutes during peak seasons
Cherry blossom, Golden Week, summer holidays, and autumn foliage all create huge queues. Early-morning arrivals are usually quieter. While in line, fill out the next step's form so you move faster.
4
Fill out the English application form
The counter has English application forms. Fields: name (must match passport exactly), passport number, entry date, desired start date, pass type (7/14/21 day, Ordinary/Green).
5
Present passport + e-voucher
Hand over the form + passport + e-voucher (printed or on phone). Staff verifies your arrival stamp. NO stamp = NO pass — if you used an automated immigration gate, go back to a manned gate and request a stamp before queueing.
6
Receive your physical pass
After a few minutes, you get the physical pass + a paper usage guide. The pass is non-replaceable if lost. Keep it in a different wallet pocket from your daily cards.
7
(Optional) Reserve seats while you're there
You can reserve Shinkansen seats at the same counter. During peak hours there's often a separate queue. If your itinerary is set, reserve at least the first 1-2 legs for peace of mind.
8
Always use the manned gate, never automated turnstiles
JR Pass does NOT work in automated turnstiles. Use the manned gate (with a station attendant) and show your pass. At Shinkansen stations there's also a gate at the platform entrance. Allow 5-10 extra minutes until you're used to it.
While the JR Pass is valid you can ride JR limited expresses + Shinkansen (excluding Nozomi/Mizuho), all JR local lines, JR buses, and even the Miyajima ferry. There's no need to return the pass — it just expires naturally on the last day. Safe travels!
