Skip the airport Wi-Fi hunt: this guide gets you online 1 minute after exiting Japan's immigration gates. 10-15 minutes to set up on any eSIM-capable phone.
What you need: an eSIM-capable phone (iPhone XS+ or major Android), credit card / PayPal, Wi-Fi (only during install), 15 minutes.
1
Install the Airalo app
Search 'Airalo' in App Store or Google Play. The app is free; you can also sign up here and buy via browser later.
2
Create an account
Email + password (or Google / Apple Sign-In). Email verification only — no phone-number check.
3
Search 'Japan' and pick a plan
Tap the globe icon → 'Japan'. Main plans: 1GB ($4.5), 3GB ($8.5), 5GB ($13), 10GB ($18), 20GB ($26), Unlimited ($53/30 days). 3-5GB suits a 1-week trip.
4
Pay — Apple Pay / card / PayPal
Buy Now → Apple Pay or Google Pay or Visa/Master/Amex. 15 seconds. Confirmation email arrives immediately.
5
Install the eSIM to your iPhone Settings
Airalo app → My eSIMs → your new eSIM → 'Install eSIM'. The Settings app opens automatically → Continue → 'Add Cellular Plan' → Done.
6
Rename the eSIM to 'Travel' or similar
Distinguish the new line from your primary (e.g. 'Travel' or 'Japan'). Helps when you check signal during the trip.
7
Configure default line, iMessage, FaceTime
Keep iMessage + FaceTime on your primary line (so SMS comes through on your home number); switch Mobile Data to Airalo. Best-of-both-worlds.
8
TURN ON Data Roaming
Settings → Cellular → Airalo eSIM → Data Roaming → ON. Critical step. Without this, no internet after landing.
9
(Optional) Test before departure
If nervous, switch your phone's Mobile Data 'Default' to Airalo while at home. It won't connect until you're in Japan (activates on landing), but the menus light up so you know the install worked.
10
Land in Japan → Airplane Mode OFF
After landing at HND / NRT / KIX, toggle Airplane Mode off. Airalo auto-connects in 10-30 seconds. You should see 'NTT DOCOMO' in the carrier name (Airalo uses docomo's network).
11
Verify with Google Maps
With Wi-Fi off, open Google Maps. If your current location pins, you're online. Speedtest app for benchmarks (typical LTE 30-100Mbps).
Airalo is pay-as-you-go. Track usage in My eSIMs. You can top up before the plan expires if you need more. No physical-SIM swap — when you fly home, just toggle Airplane Mode and your primary line takes over again. Safe travels!
