Why TWD is harder to exchange than USD in Japan in 2026

TWD volumes in Japan are smaller than USD/EUR/CNY, leading to slightly wider spreads (typically 0.5–0.8% wider) at most exchange shops. Tokyo's best shops still offer competitive TWD rates within 0.5% of mid-market, but the rate gap between best and worst shops is larger than for USD. This article explains why and helps Taiwanese tourists identify the right shops.

TL;DR

  • TWD spreads are 0.5–0.8% wider than USD on most days.
  • Best Tokyo TWD shops: World Currency Shop, Dollar Ranger, Travelex Keio Shinjuku.
  • Pre-arrival exchange in Taiwan offers similar rates; some Tokyo shops match.

Why are TWD spreads wider?

Three structural reasons:

1. Lower volume

Taiwanese tourist flow is the 3rd largest source country, but fewer individual transactions per shop than CNY (volume-leader). Less volume = less inventory turnover = wider spread.

2. Lower market depth

TWD/JPY is a smaller forex market than USD/JPY. Hedging cost slightly higher.

3. Less aggressive shop competition

Fewer shops compete heavily on TWD pricing vs USD/EUR. Fewer shops also carry deep TWD inventory.

What's the rate landscape?

For NT$5,000 (~¥23,250 at mid-market):

| Source | Approx. rate (1 TWD =) | Yen received | vs mid-market | |---|---|---|---| | Mid-market reference | 4.65 | ¥23,250 | — | | Best Tokyo shop (WCS, Dollar Ranger) | 4.66 | ¥23,300 | +0.21% | | Average Tokyo shop | 4.55 | ¥22,750 | −2.15% | | Tokyo airport counter | 4.45 | ¥22,250 | −4.30% |

Rate gap between best and average: ~0.43% wider than for USD. Significant for amounts over ¥30,000.

What this means for your trip

  • ✅ Use World Currency Shop or Dollar Ranger for best Tokyo TWD rates.
  • ✅ For amounts over NT$5,000, walk to a major chain.
  • ✅ For multi-currency Taiwanese tourists with TWD + USD, use Travelex Keio.
  • ⚠️ Avoid Tokyo airport TWD counters — wider spread than USD.
